CERB (CANADA EMERGENCY RESPONSE BENEFIT)

Given this unprecedented time the government of Canada has implemented several emergency benefit measures for Canadians.  Specifically the CERB (Canadian Emergency Response Benefit).  Benefit highlights include but are not limited to:

 

1.       A taxable monthly benefit of up to $2,000

2.       Monthly benefits for up to 4 months

To Qualify for a benefit one must:

1.       Stop working due to COVID – 19 and have no access to paid leave or other income support

2.       Workers who are sick, quarantined, or taking care of someone who is sick with COVID-19

3.       Working parents who must stay home without pay to care for children that are sick or need additional care because of school and daycare closures

4.       Workers who still have there employment but are not being paid because there is currently not sufficient work for their employer has asked them not to come to work

5.       Wage earners and self employed individuals, including contract workers, who would not otherwise be eligible for Employment Insurance

How and when to access the benefit:

April 1 2020 the taxpayer will have access to a phone number to file the claim (number not available at posting date) or obtain access through CRA my account.
